How to import only some of the files in a folder containing many files?

When downloading files from a folder in a data registry repo, is it possible to randomly select 10% of them, specify a range or filter them by name?

could you create a stage to do this? e.g. a python script downloads them into a single folder, then following stages specify that particular folder as a dependency?
